THE UNT INTERNATIONAL STUDIES PROGRAM AND THE UNT DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY PRESENT: REAGAN FANCHER

Doctorial Candidate in the UNT Department of History speaking about his new book:

"THE HOLY WARRIOR: OSAMA BIN LADEN AND HIS JIHADI JOURNEY IN THE SOVIET-AFGHAN WAR"

In The Holy Warrior, Reagan Fancher historicizes Osama bin Laden's formative years fighting the Soviet Army in Afghanistan and how those experiences influenced his rise as a prominent historical figure. How did bin Laden, a Saudi national holding no political power or government post, successfully turn the Soviet Army's occupation of Afghanistan to his advantage by cleveryly working within Afghanistan's wartime environment to obtain command and battle experience in guerrilla warfare? How did he use those experiences with other soldiers to launch al_Qaeda as a combat -seasoned guerrilla vanguard for inciting and tactically spearheading Sunni Islamist insurgencies in the native countries and abroad? Join us to learn the answers to these questions and more from UNT Doctoral Candidate and Teaching Fellow, Reagan Fancher!
